Going to school in Dubai

Dubai offers a comprehensive range of government and private schools to cater to the multi-cultural diversity of its population. The schools offer national and international curricula like the British, American, French, Indian, Japanese including the International Baccalaureate. They also provide a range of facilities from sports, creative arts and transport to day-boarding facilities. Most English-speaking schools start their school year term in September. All schools in Dubai are closed in July and August. There is a wide variation in the fees depending on school type, curriculum and facilities.

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has clearly outlined the entrance criteria, including documents required and admission tests if any. Regular inspections are conducted and ratings of schools are published in dailies and retained on the KHDA website. Every year, the KHDA releases the School Inspection Reports. Each school has been rated as either outstanding, good, acceptable or unsatisfactory. Based on these ratings, KHDA allows schools to increase fees. For example in 2012, KHDA allowed schools which received an 'outstanding' rating to increase their fees by a maximum of 6%, schools rated 'good' can increase by 4.5%, and schools rated 'satisfactory' or 'unsatisfactory' by 3%.

It is never easy to choose a new school for your child, so the KHDA School Inspection Reports do help. Another recommended community website is Which School Advisor which reviews all schools in Dubai and UAE including admission procedure, KHDA and community rating.

The KHDA has introduced a legally binding contract to be signed between parents and schools. This contract outlines each party’s rights and responsibilities and includes refund and admission policies, school fees, attendance and punctuality, health and safety provision and transportation. It also addresses parental responsibilities towards the school.
