Airport Information

Before you head to the airport, check which terminal you are flying from; a range of international airlines leave from Terminals 1 and 2, while Terminal 3 is exclusively for Emirates flights. You should arrive two to three hours before departure time; with some airlines, you can arrive later if you have checked in online – often around 90 minutes beforehand, unless you only have hand luggage then you can get there later. Be sure to refer to the check-in policy of the carrier you are travelling with. Passengers can check for delays to flight schedules through the Dubai International Airport and Emirates websites.

In Terminals 1 and 2 there are check-in desks for different international airlines, while Terminal 3 has separate check-in desks for economy, self check-in, and business and first class. Detailed layout maps of the airport can be found in the terminal and on the Emirates website.

Once you have checked in, you will need to present your passport and boarding card at passport control. You will receive an exit stamp in your passport, which is important as it shows you have left the country and not overstayed your visa. You must ensure that you leave before your visa expires, otherwise you will be fined Dhs.100 per day, on top of a flat fee of Dhs.100.

Passengers are only permitted to bring certain items, such as liquids, gels, pastes, lotions, creams and drinks, past the security checkpoint if they are in containers with a capacity of 100ml or less. All the containers must be carried in a transparent, re-sealable plastic bag. Exemptions are made for medications, baby food and special dietary requirements. Other items considered dangerous, such as aerosols, potential weapons and flammable materials, are also not permitted past this point. You should check the customs regulations of your destination country before departure too.

Once you have passed security to ‘airside’, the facilities at all terminals of Dubai International Airport are excellent, with a large range of duty free shops, restaurants and services available. The brand new Terminal 3 offers passengers one of the most modern airport experiences in the world, and features 11,000m2 of retail space, including 29 leading brand name stores, restaurants serving a range of top cuisine, and a Timeless Spa for the ultimate in relaxation before you begin your travels. The Marhaba Lounges at Terminals 1 and 3 offer a special business-class style pre-flight experience to any passenger (for a fee), which is pre-bookable online, and exclusive lounge areas for business and first-class travellers are available at all terminals. The Marhaba service also includes other benefits such as a porter service.
