Ensuring tourist safety

In general, Dubai is an extremely safe destination for visitors. Crime rates are very low and even women travelling alone will feel safe and secure in most areas, no matter what time of day it is. However, as in any city, it is sensible to take reasonable precautions regarding personal safety, such as keeping an eye on your belongings, avoiding poorly lit or unsafe areas after dark, and remaining vigilant at all times.

Dubai is also a very safe place to travel with children. Food hygiene standards are high and tap water is safe to drink (although many residents prefer to drink purified water). There are many facilities catering for children and even five-star restaurants tend to be welcoming to families.

It is sensible to ensure that you have valid and comprehensive travel insurance when visiting Dubai: not only will this cover you against lost or stolen items, but also against any medical emergencies that may arise.

Standards of medical care in Dubai are generally excellent – the city has a range of public and private hospitals that meet world standards of health care. There are some health concerns that should be taken into consideration when visiting this region. The main one is exposure to heat and sunshine: at certain times of year temperatures in Dubai can soar into the late 40s, exacerbated by high humidity. Fortunately all buildings and cars and even public transport are air conditioned, but visitors should take care when walking outside in such heat. Drink plenty of fluids to stay well hydrated and keep out of direct sunlight between midday and 16:00, when temperatures are at their highest.

Should you be the victim of a crime while in Dubai, proceed to your nearest police station to file an official report. The Dubai Police force operates a Tourist Security Department to assist visitors with any incidents or queries. The department can be reached at any time on the toll-free number 800 4438.
