Insuring your home and valuables in Dubai

While home insurance is not very popular in Dubai perhaps owing to the relative safety of the emirate from burglaries and theft, it is always advisable to go in for home insurance. This will protect you from not just burglaries, but depending on the home policy can also protect you from fire, flooding and leakages, vandalism and accidental damages.

A basic home insurance policy will insure at least the contents of your home. The policy can be tailored to include the tenant's liability, which will provide cover in cases the tenant is legally liable for damage to the property. It can also be extended to include compensation for use of alternative accommodation in the event the home becomes uninhabitable, as well as accident insurance cover for domestic helpers.

A comprehensive home insurance policy will provide protection for all three categories of coverage: building/apartment (physical property like walls, ceilings, floors etc), home contents (like furniture, electrical equipment, carpets etc) and personal belongings (like jewellery, clothing, electronics etc). You can also opt for individual coverage for any of the above categories.

Home insurance policies normally exclude loss or damage due to wear and tear, damage caused by pets, terrorism or war.

Here are some tips for home insurance courtesy of Gulf News:
  • Check your landlord's tenancy contract; watch out for any insurance clauses. Will you be held liable for damages to the actual property if you accidentally start a fire?
  • When buying an insurance, ensure adequate cover is in place, that you're covered against all perils, fire, theft, accidental damage, natural calamities
  • Inventory all the things in your apartment; photograph the contents
  • Keep receipts of items worth AED 3,000 or more
  • Store insurance documents, including pictures, receipts and other important papers in a fire-safe storage box
  • Check what documentation is required when you file a claim
  • Keep your insurance company's contact details handy
